Yeah, I never watched those either, but everyone else seems very nostalgic about old Disney shows (which I never watched any of xD) so I can see the feel there.

I feel that sometimes too. Basically when people (around my age or a bit older) talk about their past, it makes me think about mine and it gets me all nostalgic and warm and fuzzy. I feel like eve though I barely watched Cartoon Network when I was younger, I have a connection with shows like Power Puff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory and such. I also get sorta nostalgic when I watch something new that's from the past, like Jonny Quest, Little House on the Prairie, Boy Meets World, and The Wonder Years (yes, I actually watched it). There's something about it being old that connects me to the past even though it's not exactly my past.

I loved Lizzie McGuire when I was younger! I actually saw the movie before the show and that's actually how I got started watching Disney Channel in the first place. Then, it was uphill from there... until recently (minus the animated stuff on Disney XD and Girl Meets World... I actually haven't see that in a while...).

That's cool! Very Happy

Do you think there's an existing term for experiencing nostalgia for stuff that isn't YOUR nostalgia?

Honestly, I think it's a case-by-case thing which changes from person to person. Obviously, if you're just learning facts about history, even if it's from "your time-period" (like learning something about the early 20s aside from 9-11), you probably aren't gonna feel anything. But learning about another person's past (maybe a friend or a family member/ancestor) and/or about another culture that either speaks to you or connects to your nostalgia in some way... at least it makes me feel nostalgic. But it is a person-by-person case-by-case deal. We're all different with our own pasts, our own nostalgias, and our own connections to family and culture. Just the fact that we can connect with each other through something as powerful as nostalgia is a very awesome thing, even if or maybe especially if we feel nostalgic about something that's not our own nostalgia.

Ahh, that makes sense!! :3 Very insightful. I got really nostalgic the other day because my best friend sent me a bunch of old writings of hers from a few years ago.

There's a feeling I get around Autumn, or when I'm in my grandmother's kitchen, or when I watch a Studio Ghibali film I call "a nostalgia for something I never had"

idk if there's an actual word for it, but I think that's the feeling your describing, right? It's nostalgia, but you never had what your actually feeling it for

Ooh, yes, seasons always have a pretty distinct feel to me. Especially because I have an internal calendar. The months are different colors in my head.

Nice!!! Very Happy

January: white
February: pink/magenta/fuchsia (one of those xD)
March: green
April: bright sky blue
May: maroon
June: very close to April's color, but slightly lighter
July: I think it used to be a bright light pink, but now it seems more white.
August: a sort of olive green
September: Dark-ish red, like not super dark, but sorta maroon with a higher concentration of red
October: orange
November: brownish-yellow-orange
December: navy blue

Yours sound so interesting!! :0

I believe I may have gotten my mental calendar colors from a very old Winnie the Pooh calendar when I was little.

I guess for some reason I didn't see your posts earlier, but I'm going to respond two months late anyways because I had no idea you guys do the same thing! I've tried to explain this to my family before and they act like I'm crazy Razz I have colors for all of the months too. It's actually a thing called synesthesia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia

I have number-form synesthesia, so I see the numbers as a sort of chart in my head. I also do this with days of the week and months of the year, and each day of the week and month has a different color.

For me it is:
January: Light blue
February: Light green
March: Green
April: Blue
May: Yellow
June: Sky Blue
July: Yellow-orange
August: Red-orange
September: Red
October: Orange
November: Brown/gray
December: Dark green

The days of the week are:
Monday: Red
Tuesday: Green
Wednesday: Sometimes yellow, sometimes pale red
Thursday: Blue/gray
Friday: Yellow
Saturday and Sunday: Both sort of a brown/gray/black

Ok but anyways, I'm getting off track because I actually came here to see if anyone remembers any of these infomercials that used to air on cartoon channels when we were kids? Apparently they're a meme on tumblr now XD I had almost forgotten about some of them, but I've suddenly had "animal crackers in my soup" yanked from the recesses of my memory only to be stuck in my head once again. I remember hearing that song 50 times a day as I tried to watch Cartoon Network XD

So, for your viewing pleasure, the Shirley Temple Little Darling DVD Collection, now fully restored in black and white and in color! This is a limited time offer!

Don't forget Lots and Lots of Jets and Planes:

What are some other ones you remember?

I remember Muzzy, Your Baby Can Read, Zoobooks, Snuggie, and a bunch of toys and stuff like Floam. Feel free to link to your favorites!

Well, I did have ZooBooks (I had the Elephant issue since elephants were my favorite animal when I was younger) and my neighbor had floam, but I didn't really see commercials as a kid.

I was raised on VHS tapes (which only had trailers for other movies), PBS Kids (which didn't have commercials other than the occasional "NPT Parent Tip" and occasional ad for "Juicy Juice"... which *goes and looks on YouTube* can be found online and I will share it down below), and Disney Channel (which only had promos for its own shows and Disney movies).

I do remember on Disney Channel, they'd have a behind-the-scenes look at upcoming Disney movie called "Movie Surfers" (I think DC actually revived it recently) and they had a show that told you about the latest Disney Movies coming to VHS and DVD called "Mike's Super Short Show". I actually saw a Movie Surfers episode for Princess Diaries 2 (can't find it on YouTube unfortunately) where one of the "surfers" got to be in the Mattress Surfing scene (the one that's skating with the yellow helmet and turquoise shirt at 0:22) and I cannot watch that movie without thinking about Movie Surfers.

I remember Juicy Juice!!! They always played those ads with Arthur!

I remember Movie Surfers as well! The Finding Nemo one is the one I remember the most.

Well, the ads for Juicy Juice were on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) Kids (which runs from 6 am to 6 pm CT). Arthur (which is the show that Juicy Juice sponsored) is also on PBS Kids as well as (I think) Wishbone and tons of other shows, including Sesame Street. I watched a lot of PBS Kids as a little kid, so I'm probably going to be the most excited about remembering shows and stuff from PBS Kids rather than Disney Channel (though Playhouse Disney is a close second since I watched a lot of Playhouse Disney as a little kid too).

"Movie Surfers" and "Mike's Super Short Show" were both on Disney Channel seeing as they both advertised Disney movies, whether if they were about to be released in theaters or about to come out on DVD and VHS. Sometimes you'd see a movie be advertised on "Movie Surfers" and then months later be advertised again on "Mike's Super Short Show" (the first Narnia film's a good example of this).

Hey, here's a question for y'all. Do you remember what age you were when you started watching certain channels (PBS Kids, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, etc.)?

I think I probably started watching PBS Kids at a very early age, along with Playhouse Disney (the 90s/early-00s equivalent to Disney Jr.) and some Nick Jr. (at least I watched Blues Clues... even though that might have solely been on tape) and some Cartoon Network. I remember watching old Looney Tunes and old Scooby Doo shows with my dad and sister on Saturdays, along with some Playhouse Disney shows like PB&J Otter, Bear in the Big Blue House (though that might have also been on tape too), Out of the Box, Rollie Pollie Ollie, and such.
I started watching Disney Channel in either the summer or fall of 2003 (I was 8 and was either going into 2nd grade or already in the 2nd grade), soon after the Lizzie McGuire movie came out (yes, I saw the movie before the show).
I don't know when I started watching Nickelodeon. I it was sometime before fall 2007, 'cuz that's when iCarly came out and I know I watched at least a little bit of Nickelodeon before then.
I'm sure that outside of the occasional Looney Tunes and Scooby Doo rerun, I never really watched Cartoon Network (I was way more of a Disney Channel gal)... until Star Wars TCW came on (well, when I started watching the first season in the summer reruns in 2009). But even then, I never really watched Cartoon Network.

I have a confession . . . I didn't watch most of the cartoons that were on when I was a kid until I was like 16. Powerpuff Girls, Foster's, Animaniacs, Invader Zim . . . I waited like forever to watch those shows. I'm glad I watched them, and it's probably better that I waited on some of the ones with more adult humor because it was funnier to me when I was older, but I do sort of feel like I missed out as a kid Razz

I DID watch a lot of the shows that were on when I was preschool age. I actually had like a set schedule. On weekdays I watched Nick Jr stuff -- Bob the Builder, Blue's Clues, Dora, Oswald, etc. But then I would switch over to Cartoon Network, watch just a little Tom and Jerry, and wait for Scooby-Doo, which was always my favorite show and the highlight of my day.

I remember watching Playhouse Disney some too, like Rollie Pollie Olie, Bear in the Big Blue House, Out of the Box, etc., though I think those were mostly weekend shows.

There were a few others that I don't remember what channel they were on, like Zaboomafoo (or however you spell it).

But yeah once I reached about 6 or 7 my favorites were the 2003 Ninja Turtles and Scooby-Doo, so I guess those channels were 4kids and Cartoon Network. I watched the older Ninja Turtles on VHS a lot, as well as some Scooby-Doo.

The only actual channels I watched consistently were Discovery Kids (Magic School Bus, Kenny the Shark, Trading Spaces Boys vs. Girls, etc) and Animal Planet. I watched a TON of nature documentaries growing up. I loved The Crocodile Hunter the most.

And that's about it. I watched The Wild Thornberrys every now and then, along with a few other Nick shows when I was at friends' houses, and as for Disney the only Disney show I remember watching after Playhouse Disney was Timon and Pumba. For Cartoon Network every now and then I caught the occasional episode of Powerpuff Girls on the back of one of my Scooby-Doo VHS tapes, and sometimes Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry if nothing else was on. But I wouldn't say I watched any of those channels consistently.

I really didn't watch Cartoon Network consistently until Clone Wars started airing. Then I got into Ben 10, and Total Drama, and all those shows. For Nick I actually started watching reruns of their old shows when I was spending late nights on my art. And for Disney . . . I used to watch movies on that channel all the time, but I don't think I watched many of their tv shows until Gravity Falls.

So yeah, I guess I was oddly deprived as a child? It is kind of weird to explain that I like cartoons more as an adult than I did as a kid XD But I want to work in animation so I guess I have an excuse? XD

Zoboomafoo was on PBS Kids. I watched that show a lot in preschool, as well as the Big Comfy Couch; Between the Lions; Tara Time (which was actually an NPT-only show that aired between other shows); Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat; Theodore Tugboat (whoa, that's pulling something far out of the memory banks); Dragon Tales; Clifford; Arthur; Maya & Miguel (at some point); Wishbone; Zoom (fun fact: it was a remake of the 1970s show of the same name and premise); and maybe a few others I'm not remembering.

I also think I remember two other Nick Jr. shows I watched... Maggie and the Ferocious Beast (side note: Bob the Builder always freaked me out as a kid).

Plus, I think that there were a number of shows I watched, but only on tape... like Little Bear, Franklin, and Richard Scarry videos (more specifically "Richard Scarry's Best Busy People Video Ever!").

Also, I think I remember watching a few clips of Timon and Pumbaa, though I don't remember enough to confirm that I did.

Duchess Satine Kenobi wrote:

Don't worry, I was too... in some respects. I never watched all of the Cartoon Network shows that people gush over today (e.g. Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, Ed Edd and Eddy, etc.), I never watched Boy Meets World until about a year and a half ago, and I barely watched the Nickelodeon shows that people gush over... with I guess the exception of early Spongebob reruns and some early 2000s shows (e.g. Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron, early Fairly Odd Parents, etc.) that pop up on the Nicktoons station when I'm bored and eating lunch. But I did watch a lot of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon (plus TCW) later on.

Ok, now that you bring it up I do remember watching PBS kids a lot! I loved Arthur, and I also watched Clifford, Dragon Tales, and Zaboomafoo.

Oh, I remember that Nick Jr. show too! And Franklin and Little Bear, forgot about those. And do you remember Oogi? That one was really weird, but for some reason I was oddly fascinated with it as a kid. I also remember when the Wonder Pets first came out. It started as just a short between shows, like Oogi, but then eventually got its own show. By that time, though, I had outgrown it. And does anyone else remember Bing and Bong? That was a short between shows that I used to love.

I watched quite a few shows on tape as well. Actually for a lot of shows that were on I just watched the movies. Like Jimmy Neutron, Wild Thornberries, and Spongebob.

Ok, that makes me feel better about it. I'm still glad that I've looked into some of those shows since then, though. A lot of them are very well-animated, well-written, and funny. And a lot of adult humor, too.
